The Rebecca Brooch and wall hanging was inspired by someone's three favorite things about Portland, Oregon: Forest Park, the Fremont Bridge, and Merlo Field at the University of Portland. Portland is known for many things, including its bridges, its dense forested parks and surroundings, and its strong support of soccer communities. The laser-cut, eco/recycled-felt tree silhouettes portray three of the most common species of trees (Western Hemlock, Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar) found in the thickly grown Forest Park, which is one of the US's largest inner-city forested parks. The silver bridge brooch takes the form of the Fremont Bridge that crosses the Willamette River; the deck of etched copper takes the pattern of a soccer ball, showing that Portland's love of soccer (both collegiate and professional) spans across many communities. This piece was part of the Body + Site, Location + Inspiration, Portland + Oregon series, shown as part of the 13 31 Exhibition, shown at the 10th & Hoyt Gallery and the Hoffman Gallery in Portland, Oregon, 2013.
