The Jocelyn Eyepatch represents someone's three favorite things about Portland, Oregon: the rain, the St. Johns Bridge, and Pirate Town (a fabled and mysterious place that no longer exists). The mixed media of this eyepatch portrays the eccentric environment that was Pirate Town, a dilapidated, abandoned warehouse, turned impromptu skate park and counter-culture epicenter, in the heart of the North Portland (NoPo) community of St. Johns. St. Johns also hosts what is thought to be Portland's most beautiful, and most hidden away, bridges: the St. Johns Bridge, which is shown on the work in the structure of the eyepatch band, the graffiti painted across the piece, and the hand-embroidered bridge detail across the needle-felted, hand-dyed wool eye-covering. The sterling silver droplets tickle the face of the wearer just as the cool rain tickles the skin as it falls from the sky. This piece was part of the Body + Site, Location + Inspiration, Portland + Oregon series, shown as part of the 13 31 Exhibition, shown at the 10th & Hoyt Gallery and the Hoffman Gallery in Portland, Oregon, 2013.
